A Run for Congress?

Feb 19, 2026

News broke that my local Congresswoman will not be running again.
My dad texted me the article with the message:

Run for Congress

I smiled when I read his message. Because what he was really saying was: I see your power.

I see YOUR power, just as my father sees it in me.

The truth is, we don’t need to be members of Congress to influence policy. We can influence policy at the kitchen table.

Recenty the youth organizers with the Pesticide Free Soil Project gathered around my kitchen table. We cooked tacos with homemade tortillas. We rolled out the dough for a pumpkin pie crust. The ingredients support and grow policies that protect land, water, air, and workers’ health. During the meal around my kitchen table, we planned our campaign to expand pesticide-free buffer zones around school campuses.

We hold the power and influence to change policies that impact all levels of environmental sustainability. A survey found that among the top coprorations customers are the leading driver of their sustainability initiatives. At the end of EAT LESS WATER, I wrote, “Customers are over two times more influential on sustainability decisions than company shareholders and three times more than policy-holders and non-governmental organizations.” Three times more than policy-holders, did you catch that part? The trick is to merge our collective influence and power.

This is why I wrote THE KITCHEN ACTIVIST to give more opportunities for us to take concrete action steps to merge our collective power. One powerful way to begin is with the Kitchen Activist Meal Plan, included in my next book, because it offers a simple structure to:
Support farmers working in alignment with nature
Reduce food waste
Eat what’s in season
Turning everyday meals into quiet acts of change
Every time we plan a week of meals, we are writing a policy because we decide:
who gets our food dollars,
The kind of farming we support,
How much food gets wasted in our home kitchens and our workplaces,
The health we foster for ourselves, our loved ones, and the natural world through our food and drink.

You or I don’t need a seat in Congress to shape the future.
WE already have a seat at our kitchen table.
Start there.
